German Shepherd vs. Dutch Shepherd: Which Breed Is Right for You?
One of the most common questions we receive at Stay Wild K9 is:
"Should I get a German Shepherd or a Dutch Shepherd?"
The truth is, there isn't a right or wrong answer.
We breed both because we genuinely love both breeds. While they share many similarities, each brings something unique to the table. The best breed isn't the one with the highest drive or the most impressive pedigree—it's the one that best fits your lifestyle and goals.
How I Fell in Love With Both Breeds
Growing up, my uncle always had German Shepherds. Like many kids, I wanted the dog that my hero had, so naturally I fell in love with the breed as well.
When I was a teenager, I purchased my first working line German Shepherd. That dog introduced me to the world of working dogs and eventually led me to trainer and K9 handler Tracy Landis, who became both a mentor and a friend.
Through Tracy, I was introduced to Dutch Shepherds.
While I loved the loyalty and partnership of the German Shepherd, there was something about the Dutch Shepherd that immediately grabbed my attention. Where the German Shepherd had heart and devotion, the Dutch Shepherd brought intensity, athleticism, and just a little bit of chaos.
I've been hooked on both breeds ever since.
German Shepherds: The Loyal All-Around Athlete
In general, our German Shepherds tend to be larger dogs with heavier bone and a more substantial build.
They are often the breed I recommend first when someone is looking for an active companion, family dog, or adventure partner. German Shepherds are incredibly devoted to their people and typically settle more naturally in the home once their needs have been met.
That doesn't mean they're low-energy. German Shepherds are highly intelligent and need both physical exercise and mental engagement. If you don't give them a job, they'll often find one for themselves.

Dutch Shepherds: Controlled Chaos in a Brindle Package
If German Shepherds are the all-around athletes, Dutch Shepherds are often the extreme sports competitors.
Most of our Dutch Shepherds are medium to large-sized dogs with incredible athletic ability, energy, and stamina. They thrive when given structure, training, and a purpose.
For the right person, their intensity is exactly what makes them special.
For the wrong person, it can be overwhelming.
That's why we spend so much time discussing goals and lifestyle before recommending a puppy.

Every Dog Is an Individual
Of course, dogs don't read breed descriptions.
Journey, our German Shepherd female, has enough drive and energy to rival almost any dog we've owned. We often joke that she's actually a Malinois wearing a German Shepherd costume because she simply never stops moving.
On the opposite end of the spectrum is Joy, our retired Dutch Shepherd female. Joy believes ideal exercise consists of moving from one couch cushion to another. If the weather isn't perfect, she'd rather stay inside and supervise everyone else's activities.
Those two dogs are a good reminder that breed tendencies matter, but individual personalities matter too.
Which Breed Should You Choose?
The real question isn't which breed is better.
It's which breed is better for you.
At Stay Wild K9, our goal isn't to convince you that one breed is superior to the other. Our goal is to help match the right dog with the right home.
Whether you choose a German Shepherd or a Dutch Shepherd, you'll be bringing home a dog bred from generations of proven working stock, carefully selected for health, temperament, and working ability.
Still not sure which breed is the better fit? We'd be happy to talk about your goals, lifestyle, and experience level to help you make the right choice.
Stay wild and wonderful.
