Traveling With Dogs: Why Acadia National Park Should Be on Every Dog Owner's Bucket List
A few weeks ago, we loaded up Maui and headed north to Acadia National Park in Maine.
One of my favorite things about having dogs is that they don't keep us from traveling—they're one of the reasons we travel. Whether it's hiking a new trail, watching a sunset, or grabbing dinner in a new town, I want my dogs to experience those adventures with me.
Finding places that truly welcome dogs isn't always easy.
Acadia was different.
A National Park You Can Enjoy Together
Many national parks have strict rules about where dogs are allowed, which often means leaving them behind while you explore.
Acadia is one of the few national parks where your dog can actually be part of the adventure. Dogs are welcome on most of the park's hiking trails and carriage roads, giving owners the opportunity to experience much of the park together.
For active breeds like German Shepherds, Dutch Shepherds, and Malinois, that's a huge advantage. Instead of spending the day waiting at the hotel, your dog gets to hike, explore, and experience the park right alongside you.
More Than Just the Park
As much as we loved Acadia, what surprised us even more were the surrounding communities.
Bar Harbor is one of the most dog-friendly towns we've ever visited. Everywhere we went, dogs were walking with their owners, restaurants with outdoor seating, and businesses with water bowls waiting outside for thirsty pups.
Maui received compliments everywhere we went on the trip, and was a crowd pleaser as usual.
It never felt like we had to search for places that allowed dogs. Instead, dogs felt like part of everyday life, and that made the entire trip even more enjoyable.
Our Favorite Hike: Great Head Trail
If we had to recommend just one trail, it would be Great Head Trail.
This loop quickly became our favorite hike of the trip. It offered a little bit of everything: beautiful coastal forests, challenging rock scrambles, and incredible views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
It wasn't just a walk through the woods. It felt like an adventure.
Maui loved navigating the rocky sections and taking in all the new sights and smells, while we found ourselves stopping every few minutes to admire the scenery.
If you're comfortable hiking uneven terrain and your dog has some trail experience, I highly recommend adding Great Head Trail to your itinerary. Just take your time, watch your footing, and enjoy the views.
Help Keep Places Like This Dog Friendly
One of the things that stood out to me throughout the trip was how welcoming everyone was to dogs.
That kind of access is a privilege, and it's up to all of us to help keep it that way.
Follow the park's pet rules. Keep your dog leashed where required. Pick up after them, respect wildlife, and be considerate of other hikers and visitors.
Most importantly, know your dog.
Not every dog enjoys busy sidewalks, crowded restaurants, or passing other dogs on narrow trails, and that's okay. Part of being a responsible owner is recognizing your dog's comfort level and setting them up for success.
Every time we take our dogs into public, we're representing the dog-owning community. The better ambassadors we are, the more likely incredible places like Acadia will continue welcoming dogs for years to come.
Final Thoughts
Acadia quickly became one of our favorite places we've visited with a dog, and it's a destination we'd happily return to.
Between the miles of dog-friendly trails, the welcoming atmosphere in Bar Harbor, and unforgettable hikes like Great Head Trail, it's easy to see why this park is a favorite among dog owners.
If you're looking for a vacation where your dog can truly be part of the experience—not just along for the ride—I can't recommend Acadia National Park enough.
Have a favorite dog-friendly destination? We'd love to hear about it. We're always looking for our next adventure.
Stay wild and wonderful.
